Ardell Stone School of Dancing Performing Company wins Regional Awards!!!

Congratulations to the Ardell Stone School of Dancing Performing Company! The Ardell Stone dancers competed in Tremaine's Regional Dance Competition in Washington, DC. The girls competed against dancers from New Jersey, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland. They were judged on technique, showmanship, choreography and costumes.

The Junior Company won 2nd place Lyrical and 3rd place Jazz! This was their first competititon!

The Senior Company won 1st place Lyrical and 2nd place Jazz!

The Ardell Stone dancers also took classes in jazz, ballet, contemporary, street, tap and hip hop dance from some of the leading dance professionals in the country.

The dance students also auditioned for dance scholarships to attend future Tremaine Dance Conventions.
Congratulations to Sidney Green for being selected for a Teen Convention Scholarship!

Teaching dance is more than having a student copy steps that you dance. It is about teaching a solid foundation that can be built upon. Students are encouraged to look at the qualities that make up a movement and to have fun while learning.

At Ardell Stone School of Dancing, all students are given a nurturing and supportive environment to develop expression, performance and a passion for learning the art of dance and sharing it with others.

Some of our goals as teachers is to create well-rounded dancers who learn how to think, create and work with others, as well as they dance. This background will give them self-confidence that will help them in all areas of their life.

Ardell Stone School of Dancing students had the opportunity to work with guest choreographer, Lindsay Sprague this past weekend. Lindsay, originally from Charlotte,NC travels throughout the country teaching for dance studios and many high school and college dance teams. Lindsay is also the head coach of the nationally ranked University of South Carolina Dance Team.

Members of the Junior and Senior Performing Companies learned contemporary lyrical pieces that they will perform at the upcoming competitions and in the 2012 Recital at the Roanoke Performing Arts Theatre.

Sakinah LeStage with Shoshillz International will be teaching Hip Hop classes at Ardell Stone School of Dancing on Friday, September 30, 2011. Sakinah LeStage is quickly rising in the entertainment business as a true innovator in the art of movement from the stage to music videos, to award shows and more. Behind the scenes, Sakinah is steadily crafting the hottest new choreography with a style that ranges from the intricate and eye catching to the fun signature moves that go straight from the video screen to the clubs.
Sakinah just choreographed the Atlanta Falcons Halftime Show with Jasmine Guy. She also recently performed in Beyonce's Run the World Video. In addition, Sakinah has choreographed for T-Pain, Mario, Jagged Edge, Ne-Yo, and Keri Hilson. Sakinah has toured and danced with Ne-Yo, Fergie, T-Pain and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

The Ardell Stone School of Dancing Performing Company competed at the West Coast Dance Explosion Regional Competition in Vienna, Virginia on February 5, 2011. The dancers competed in jazz, lyrical, hip hop, and tap.

The senior group won 1st place Senior Line Tap, 2nd place Senior Lyrical Line and 2nd Place Senior Lyrical Jazz.
The entire Performing Company won 1st Place Senior Extended Line Hip Hop, 1st place Senior Extended Line Jazz and 1st Place Senior Extended Line Lyrical. The Lyrical also won Overall High Score Senior Extended Line. All of their dances also received 4 Star Awards. The dancers were judged on technique, choreography, showmanship and costuming.

In addition, April Martin was selected for a one time Senior Convention Scholarship! She gets to attend a future West Coast Dance Explosion for free! McKenna Hayes, Lisa Myers, Cheyenne Parker and Mackenzie Price were Senior Audition Finalists!

The Performing Company will still have practice on Friday, December 17 from 3:30 - 5:30pm. Bring all costumes with you and you may pay your fee for West Coast on Friday 12/17.

We will have classes on Monday, December 20 and Tuesday, December 21.
Anyone who has not picked up their tank top, hoodie, sweat pants or warmup suit order may do so on Monday or Tuesday. All orders are in!

Congratulations to Devin Chavira for being selected to the Arts House Dance Company at the University of Pennsylvania! Devin studied ballet, pointe, jazz, tap and lyrical dance at Ardell Stone School of Dancing for 12 years.

During the open auditions Devin learned a ballet barre, ballet combination and jazz combination. For call backs Devin had to perform an across the floor section, a choreography section and a jazz and lyrical combination.

The company performs jazz, ballet, lyrical, contemporary, pointe and tap. Devin will be dancing in four numbers for the company's fall show in November!

Dance instills a sense of discipline and determination in the soul of the child. With these attributes, young people have the confidence to handle college and job interviews, and they learn that they must balance their academics with their passion for dance - always a good thing for young people to comprehend!
As for a career in dance, there are many opportunities, from performing to teaching and everywhere in between. Some former dancers move on to careers as dance critics or writers; others become physical therapists, Pilates specialists, and so on. Many become lawyers or doctors because they have what it takes to make it through the educational process. Why? Because they learned about commitment in their dance classes.
Dance is fun, great exercise and a wonderful learning experience that prepares young people for success!

Ardell Stone Dancer signs with MSA in Los Angeles, California

Congratulations to former Ardell Stone School of Dancing student, Chandler Dawes, who recently signed with McDonald Selznik Associates(MSA). MSA is one of the leading dance agencies in both Los Angeles and New York City. They specialize in the representation of dancers and choreographers but they also represent some of the finest stage directors and production designers in the entertainment industry.

MSA furnishes the talent seen in commercials, music videos, concert tours, feature films and television shows, broadway shows, and corporate events. Severl MSA signees have been nominated and received awards that include the Emmys, Tony Awards, and the American Choreography and MTV Awards.

Being with an agent insures Chandler gets auditions for different jobs and basically helps her have a dance career. MSA(the agent) does not get paid unless the dancer does, and then the agent gets a certain cut out of their paycheck.

Congratulations Chandler and good luck!! We are very proud of you!

Lacy, a freshman at Virginia Tech, and Lydia, a juniorat VT , were selected as new members of the Dance Company of Virginia Tech at auditions earlier this week. The group choreographs and performs lyrical, jazz, and hip hop dance.

The students of Ardell Stone School of Dancing will present Everything Old Is New Again at the Roanoke Performing Arts Theatre (Roanoke Civic Center Auditorium) this Friday, June 11, 2010 at 6:00p.m.
Students will perform to favorite songs from past decades and to the music of today. Some of the highlights include the pointe production featuring music from George Balanchine's Ballet, Jewels; the first Act Finale - a Hip Hop Mash Up and the Dancin' Dad's perform in "The Rock of Ages".

Performing Company Auditions!

Auditions for Ardell Stone School of Dancing's 2010 - 2011 Performing Company will be held at the studio on Friday, June 4 from 4:00 - 6:00p.m.
The audition is open to students who will be in grades 6 - 12 during the 2010 -2011 school year. Students must take ballet, tap and jazz in order to audition.

The Performing Company attends dance conventions and competitions and takes classes with guest teachers and choreographers throughout the year. It is a great way to further enhance your dance technique and dance education. The students who participate in the group improve tremendously and also have a great time. It does require certain time commitments.

Ardell Stone School of Dancing students participated in a Dance Audition during the West Coast Dance Explosion in Reston, Virginia.
Congratulations to McKenna Hayes and Mackenzie Price for being selected as senior audition finalists. Congratulations to April Martin and Chandler Dawes for receiving scholarhips from the West Coast Dance Explosion Regional Dance Competition.
Each of the dancers participated in an audition with dancers from Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York. The audition consisted of improvisation, ballet and jazz technique.
April was selected for a senior convention scholarship. This allows April to attend one West Coast Convention for free this year! Chandler was selected for an Elite Dancer Scholarhip. This enables Chandler to attend every West Coast Convention free for an entire year and she also has the opportunity to perform at West Coast Dance Explosion's National Gala in Las Vegas, Nevada this July.

Ardell Stone School of Dancing students compete at West Coast Dance Explosion

The Ardell Stone School of Dancing Performing Company won several awards at West Coast Dance Explosion Regional Dance Convention and Competition in Reston, Virginia.
During the two day convention the Ardell Stone students took classes in ballet, jazz, tap, lyrical, contemporary, hip hop and musical theatre from some of the leading dance choreographers in the country.
The dancers did a fantastic job in the very challenging dance competition. The Ardell Stone dancers received 4 stars out of 5 in all of the their dances and qualified for the National Competition to be held in Las Vegas this summer. In addition, they won 1st place Tap and Overall High Score Extended Line. The Senior Group won 2nd place Jazz Line and 1st place Lyrical Line. The Production Company won 1st place Jazz Production, 1st place Lyrical Production and Overall High Score Production. The dancers were judged on technique (50%), showmanship (20%), choreography (20%) and costuming (10%).

Ardell Stone Dancer selected for Tremaine's National Apprentice Company

Congratulations to Chandler Dawes who was selected for Tremaine's National Apprentice Company!
Chandler, a student at Ardell Stone School of Dancing in Roanoke, Virginia went to the Tremaine Dance 5 -day intensive at the Debbie Reynolds Studios in North Hollywood, California in July 2009. While there, she took classes in ballet, jazz, lyrical, tap and hip hop with many world renowed teachers and choreographers. Chandler then took part in a 3 hour audition that began with executing across the floor dance technique and then more complex dance combinations. She then had to learn and perform a minute long dance in a small group, followed by a solo 32 count improv. After that, there was an interview with the judges and Tremaine faculty members.
Chandler was selected from dancers from all over the United States. Her selection allows her to attend any Tremaine Dance Convention for an entire year for free. During each convention she attends, she trains, rehearses, assists the faculty during classes and performs in the faculty show. She also gets to learn the behind the scenes aspects of dance conventions. She performs various jobs such as tallying scores, working the dressing rooms and conducting the auditions that are held in each city. It is a great opportunity but also a lot of work.
Chandler plans to continue with Company after graduation as well.

Dancers in the Tuesday 5:45 Jazz Class held a Tacky Tuesday celebration! The students dressed in crazy socks, and parts of old dance costumes! They had a great time remembering their dances from past recitals and also worked very hard on their jazz technique.

Ardell Stone School of Dancing students win dance scholarships!

Cheyenne Parker was awarded a Senior Convention Scholarship after auditioning at the Tremaine Dance Convention in Washington, DC. Sidney Green also received a Junior Convention Scholarship during the dance workshop. Dance Students were taught a ballet combination and a jazz combination during the auditions. The dancers competed against other dance students from Virginia, Maryland, New York and Delaware. The scholarships allow Cheyenne and Sidney to attend a Tremaine Dance Convention free during the next year.

The Performing Company did a great job at the Tremaine Dance Competition in Washington, DC last weekend.

27 girls attended the 2 day convention. They had the opportunity to study with some of the leading dance professionals in the country. During the competition, the Senior Group won 1st place Lyrical and 2nd place Jazz. The Production Company won 1st place Tap, 1st place Lyrical and 2nd place Jazz!
